Who can know what surprises await us?
On Pentecost Sunday, I received a very pleasant surprise when our
after-service fellowship hour was transformed into a celebration of my tenth
anniversary as your pastor at St. Mary’s United Church of Christ.
I am humbled and encouraged by your continuing support of my ministry
here at St. Mary’s and I look forward to the surprises that God has in store
for us as we move into this next chapter of our journey together.
I thank our Consistory President, Jim Lloyd, for his kind remarks and my
special thanks to Nancy Bailey and the members of the Church and Ministry and
Fellowship Committees for their efforts and their thoughtfulness to make this
time such a special occasion. We
have finished another successful program year with our share of excitement and
opportunities, and it is through the continued commitment of so many of you that
we continue to accomplish great things in the name of Jesus Christ through our
ministry together.
This summer will offer us all a time to catch our breath and rejuvenate our spirits as we enjoy the warmth and sunshine and the time for recreation that summer brings. Molly and I are anticipating the birth of a second grandchild as the summer begins and we plan to travel to Oregon in August to celebrate the new arrival with my son, Eliot, and his wife Felicia. We are hoping that Geoff is able to take time from his responsibilities at Ft. Drum, New York to bring Paulita and Noah for a visit with us some time during the month of July. We also plan to take some time to reconnect with our families in New York and Pennsylvania and enjoy the adventures we can share along the way.
Summer is a time that emphasizes our opportunity to be, more so than to do, and I hope that all of us can find our times to set aside our cares and worries about tasks and simply be mindful of what a gift and a joy life truly is. As we move through this time of renewal, whether gathered or scattered, may we continue to offer to God our praise and thanksgiving for the blessing that life is, and may we continue to be open to the surprises that await us from our God who grants us every good and perfect gift. Have a safe and blessed summer!
Grace and peace, Dick
