The season of Pentecost is upon us. We remember the story of the small band of apostles entrusted with a mission, but timid and fearful about their ability to fulfill it. Jesus had told them that he would not abandon them. Yet without his bodily presence they were feeling lost and alone. But then the miracle of Pentecost took place. The wind blew, and from heaven the Holy Spirit descended upon them as if tongues of fire came to rest upon each one of them. Suddenly, they were on fire. They were passionate and confident and ready to face the world and their mission to it. The Spirit of God is like that. And this is the Spirit whose power we acknowledge and celebrate, the Spirit that sets us on fire with the enthusiasm necessary to motivate our action and empower us for ministry in the name of Jesus Christ.
The one question that this season demands of us is: are we on fire with the Spirit? Is there a passion that burns within us for Christian discipleship? Some of us may need to use this season as a time to reflect as to whether there is any passion at all to our faith. Maybe the enthusiasm has gone out of our witness and dissipated from our service. We used to care; but now we don’t care. Others of us may need to reflect upon that which fills us with emotion and drive. Is it for service to the cause of Christ or in pursuit of our own desires? Are we motivated toward faithfulness or are we misdirected toward negative and destructive ends? Fire can be helpful; but misguided fire can cause great harm.
This is our time to experience the passion of the Spirit-filled life. This is our time to discern the movement of the Spirit in our midst. When the Spirit blows, it is time to open the sails and let the Spirit fill us and carry us forward. May our lives and the life of our church be on fire with Spirit’s power, motivating our discipleship and empowering our service to the cause of Christ.
Grace and peace,
Dick

From the STEWARDSHIP COMMITTEE
Entering into the summer months, we are reminded that our General Fund balance is already running a deficit. And usually during the summer, we tend to see the General Fund balance decrease rather than increase. While we can be pleased with our continuing support of our Capital Improvement Fund and benevolent causes, we must remember that our first obligation is to support the work of our church through our support of its General Fund. We ask that you please remember your support of St. Mary’s throughout the weeks ahead with your prayers, your presence, and your financial resources and may God continue to bless all our endeavors as we strive to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ.
Sunday, June 6th, , we will be having our children’s outdoor service followed by a congregational picnic provided by the Fellowship Committee. We will be honoring graduates and our Children and Youth Department leaders and teachers at this service. This service will especially appeal to the young and young at heart, so make your plans now to join us outdoors and enjoy the natural beauty and wonder of God’s creation with us.
The Worship Committee has put together a day-long retreat specifically for young mothers who need a day away for spiritual renewal. The retreat will be held on Saturday, June 5th, starting at 9:00 am with lunch provided. Anna Rollins will serve as retreat leader for this event which will be held at the Bell Cedars Retreat house at Carroll Lutheran Village. We are asking for a donation of $5.00 to register and a sign-up sheet is located in the Vestry. We hope that many of our younger mothers will be able to take advantage of this meaningful and exciting opportunity. Deadline to sign-up is June 1st.
As in previous years the July & August newsletters will be combined. All newsletter articles must be received by June 15th in order to be included in the July /August newsletter.
Names are $1.00 each in either Honor or Memory.
Deadline is June 13th. Envelopes are located in the back of the sanctuary.
Tuesday, June 8,
Nancy will be giving the Box Lunch talk for the Carroll County Historical
Society. Her topic is” Monuments At Gettysburg.” The
monuments on the battlefield were put there by the veterans themselves to tell
the soldiers' stories after they were gone. Each is unique and has a story to
tell. Nancy examines monuments and the meanings of their markings and symbols.
After this session, you will never look at the monuments on the battlefield
the same way.
The Box Lunch talk is held at Carroll Post,American Legion, Westminster, Md.
The Post is located at the corner of green and Sycamore St.
Admission is $1.00 for members and $4.00 for non-members.
The last project for the Mother’s Class was putting lilies in the altar vases for Easter. After this bill was paid there was $11.21 left in our account, so this was turned over to the General Fund of the church. The account is now closed. Again thanks to everyone that helped support our class projects over the years.
